JOB DESCRIPTION:
The accountant will be responsible for performing daily accounting and financial support activities, including data entry, reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable processing, and basic project cost tracking. This role is ideal for an accounting professional seeking hands-on experience in financial operations and exposure to project-based accounting within an industrial and project-driven environment. The position provides opportunities to develop practical knowledge in job costing, financial reporting, payroll support, taxation compliance, and accounting system management.
THE ROLE:
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, including preparation of journal entries and month-end closing activities.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records in accordance with company policies and accounting standards.
- Maintaining organized accounting records, digital files, and supporting financial documentation.
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including vendor, subcontractor, and customer invoices.
- Monitor outstanding receivables and coordinate follow-up on pending payments.
- Verify invoice accuracy, coding, approvals, and supporting documentation prior to processing.
- Maintain vendor accounts and support payment processing activities.
- Support project job costing by tracking project-related expenses, invoices, labour allocations, and budget utilization.
- Coordinate with project managers to collect and organize financial information related to project progress and milestones.
- Assist with progress billing preparation, retention tracking, and project invoicing requirements.
- Maintain project cost records and support budget monitoring activities.
- Perform bank, credit card, vendor, and account reconciliations under supervision.
- Assist with payroll preparation, payroll documentation, and employee record maintenance for office and field staff.
- Support payroll-related reporting and ensure proper record retention.
- Monitor financial transactions and identify discrepancies for review and resolution.
- Support compliance activities related to HST/GST filings, payroll documentation, and other regulatory requirements.
- Assist with audits, year-end closing, and financial reviews.
- Ensure accounting activities comply with company policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Support continuous improvement of accounting processes and financial reporting practices.
- Maintain accurate financial data within Zoho Books, QuickBooks, and other internal accounting systems.
- Support implementation and maintenance of organized accounting workflows and documentation systems.
- Provide administrative and accounting support to the finance department and management team as required.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- 3+ years of accounting or bookkeeping experience (engineering industry exposure is an asset).
- Knowledge of accounting principles and financial processes.
- Familiarity with accounting software such as Zoho Books or QuickBooks (training can be provided).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and basic data analysis.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
